Your Ad Here (on this umbrella)

7615231300_2e265ecca8_mIt’s a fact that 100% of people on Earth watch Mad Men. Ok, maybe it’s not a fact. But it is a fact that just about everyone on Earth is familiar with advertising. We see it day in and day out. It’s on billboards along our drive, it’s in our subway cars, it’s on the street, in our email, interrupting our Hulu videos. It’s on our clothes and our coffee cups. Across the globe, the advertising industry is worth more than $500 billion. The U.S. accounts for almost 40% of that – approaching $200 billion.

Value of Outdoor Advertising

CBS Outdoor is one of the largest outdoor marketing companies in the world. In Manhattan, they charge anywhere from $0.01 to $0.13 per viewer over the age of 18. In other words, a medium sized Times Square ad which will be seen by 1,000,000 per week for a month will cost $90,000 per month!

Let’s apply those figures to umbrella-based advertising. Less people will see a single umbrella than would see a wall ad because a single umbrella on the ground isn’t as visible as a wall ad. However, there will be multiple umbrellas and they’re mobile, so more people will see the ad than would see a single wall ad. So, we’re assuming that the number of views for a fleet of umbrellas is the same as the number of views for a single wall ad. Putting Times Square aside for a minute as an outlier, the average price of a wall ad in high-traffic areas of Manhattan is just under $20,000 per month with an expected 744,000 views.

In New York City, it rains an average of 10 days each month. In other words, your ads would be out and about 1/3 of the time.  If we cut those numbers by 2/3 to account for the fact that it rains in Manhattan 1/3 of the time, we end up with a monthly value of about $6,600 for about 250,000 views. That’s half a million eyes taking in your ad every month.

Branded Ads

Advertising derives its value from a couple of places. First, you put out an ad because you want people to buy a product or service. You want conversions. Second, you put out ads to raise brand awareness. If people see an image or hear a phrase enough times, it’ll stick in the back of their minds and pop up the next time they’re driving past one of your stores or shopping online or considering their lunch options. Either way, the idea is to deliver an effective ad to as many of the people in your market as possible.

What makes an ad effective? That depends on whom you want to sell to. Young people may like quirky humor and old people may like nostalgia. Middle-aged folks may want information and children may want bright colors and loud noises. We can’t tell you what your ad should look like because it depends on your brand, your goals, and your market. We can, however, tell you how to deliver it.

Advertising on umbrellas

You know where this is going. We only do one thing here. Umbrellas. That’s right. You can put ads on umbrellas, and as we’ve demonstrated, those ads have real value. You’re probably thinking that you could just buy umbrellas with your brand on them. You’re right. You could. You could hand them out to your employees whenever it rained. Of course, your employees will take them home, forget about them, or lose them, just like all of us do every time it rains. Your branded umbrellas will be left behind at restaurants and on subway cars or simply thrown out. With a ‘brellaBox, everyone will know where to go to pick up an umbrella and to drop one off. Your brand will get carried around the city and brought back into your own office, plus your umbrellas will live to see another rainy day.

    Hi there,

How much do you charge to place ads on umbrellas? Is there a price model to this?? ie a minimum I would have to or a maximum and a one time fee?. PS. are these stickers that can be peeled off? or are they permanently on these umbrellas?

    Regards,

    Diana

      Hi Diana,

We don’t currently sell branded umbrellas a la carte. We’d be happy to license a ‘brellaBox to you and fill it with branded umbrellas, though. The ads are permanently printed on the umbrellas, so no need to worry about them peeling off in the rain! For more information, please email us. Thanks for your interest!

      Best,
      The ‘brellaBox Team
